Your New Zealand Vacation: Making the Most of the Outdoors

There’s no denying New Zealand’s stunning landscapes are beautiful. From mountains and glaciers to active volcanoes and dense forests, to lakes and rocky and sandy coastlines, this part of the Southern Hemisphere has it all. It’s amazing how much there is to do and see in New Zealand, despite its small size. In addition to exploring the landscapes, you can get active as part of your New Zealand vacation, satisfying both the sedentary and adventurous.

Outdoor adventure is big in New Zealand. Kiwis love getting outside and take the natural world for granted. ‘Going bush’ is almost like a spiritual experience, where you commune with nature while exploring an unspoiled forest. The great Kiwi beach holiday in a bach is another iconic tradition. Kiwis love these small holiday homes, often rough built. It’s a place where you can relax and unwind. Most New Zealanders spend their vacations outdoors - walking, fishing, jet boating, bungy jumping, canyon swinging, etc. You can do these independently or with a tourist guide.

Snow sports are also a lot of fun in New Zealand. Ski season is usually from June to October, but it varies by area. Both islands have ski areas, but the majority are on the South Island. Thousands of kilometers of trails await walkers, trampers, and hikers in this tranquil part of the world. There are 9 popular tracks, including Tongariro Northern Circuit in the North Island and Abel Tasman Coast Track and Milford Track in the South Island. New Zealanders love hunting and fishing. Deer, pigs, and wild goats are all legal to hunt. Hunting permits are required on public conservation land, though. There are a lot of salmon and trout rivers in New Zealand, but the central North Island is famous for them. Every New Zealand vacation includes salt water fishing. Big game fishing is popular in the Bay of Islands, Whitianga, Tutukaka and Tuhua. It’s also super popular to surf cast from many beaches around the country.
